Description

The Cruise of the Aceron – Her Majesty’s Steam Vessel on Survey in New Zealand Waters 1848-51
by Sheila Natusch.

The Acheron is one of a select company of famous ships whose name will remain prominent in New Zealand history. In 1848 she was sent out from England under Admiralty orders to make the first full and accurate survey of our coast and harbours. Over four years this task was carried out superbly and to a very high standard as the Acheron was an early steamship equipped with both sails and paddle-wheels.

A descriptive shore and shipboard journal was kept to be published as a book. That never happened as the journal in two separate parts, papers and records were filed away in different museums and institutions.

The author has put matters to rights with her thoroughly researched and distinctive account of the whole voyage from the very beginnings to the surveys conclusion.
There are 95 historical illustrations from this voyage throughout the book.
