When the boys were away: New Zealand Women in World War II
by Eve Ebbett
When war was declared on 3 September 1939, no one in New Zealand escaped the consequences. When the boys were away is the left behind women's story. They worked on the land, in factories, shops, offices and hospitals. They organized, volunteered and raised funds. They enlisted for the services and learned a new range of skills and a way of life never before dreamed of.
This is about New Zealand history. But it is in the portrayal of women in the face of adversity that is an example and inspiration for women of all generations.
