There was a pact amongst the crew ( of Lion New Zealand ) that if anybody felt tempted to do the next Whitbread in four years' time, he could immediately ring up his mates & they would dissuade him, with tales of cold, wet, windy nights in the Southern Ocean as opposed to hot showers & clean sheets at home. What weak creatures we are; one phone call from Peter Blake was all that was needed to throw that out the window.
Such is the respect that these Kiwi sailors had for Steinlager 2 skipper, Peter Blake, that rationale, and the human desire for human comfort, could be so quickly discarded when he approached his chosen crew to mount a challenge for the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World race.
