Cecil Rhodes had gargantuan appetites, not just for wealth and power, 'race patriotism' and cartographic scarlet, but also, as Robert Rotberg now reveals, for food, alcohol and tobacco. He turned grandiloquent dreams into reality, lusted for world influence through secret societies modelled on the Jesuits or the freemasons, and devoted much time, energy and wealth to arranging his own immortality. Rotberg, with his collaborator Miles F. Shore, treats Rhodes as a patient, attempting to explain some at least of his remarkable drives through a detailed clinical study of his physical and mental health. 

Rotberg is a historian of Central Africa who has hitherto been more notable for his productivity than his percipience. But he has now provided a biography which for the first time comes close to matching the megalomaniac scale and remarkable range of Rhodes' short life. Biographies of Rhodes (and there have been at least twenty-four) have inhabited the extreme reaches of hagiography and demonology, but Rotberg attempts to occupy the middle ground, judging Rhodes according to the standards of his age, wondering at the overweening ambitions and extraordinary energies as well as castigating the manifold faults. 

He comes closer than any other biographer to explaining the enigma. Rhodes was intellectually limited, a poor speaker who rambled repetitiously around his point, often ....
